Frequent testing and prevention save lives!

Get informed about the most common respiratory diseases, and their prevention, diagnosis and treatment methods.

Pulmonary Function Tests

  • Pulmonary Function Tests, as the title implies, are a series of tests that give picture of the functional capabilities of the lungs.

Most common and widely known test is Spirometry, which is a basic examination for the diagnosis and follow up of a number of respiratory diseases.

The following most common tests are Lung Volumes and Capacities measurement and Diffusion Capacity measurement.

Night Oximetry

  • Night oximetry consists of the all-night continuous measurement of arterial oxygen saturation.  This is done non-invasively with the pulse oximetry method. (SpO2).

Drops in saturation values recorded during the night are considered one of the most important parameters in identifying sleep apnea. But the value of night oximetry extends beyond sleep apnea diagnosis. It can also be used for example in patients with COPD to determine the need for supplemental oxygen at night.

Night Oximetry

  • An initial sleep study is performed at home with the use of ResMed ApneaLink device, which has the capability to identify Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR). It is a practical and user-friendly device, which produces accurate measurements and allows their reliable interpretation.

Bronchoscopy

  • Bronchoscopy is a procedure, by which the physician can examine the patient’s large airways (trachea, bronchi), which are the main way of air delivery to the lungs.

The device used, the fiber-optic bronchoscope, is a slim, flexible telescope wide as a pencil.

More information can be found in the file below, by the American Thoracic Society (ATS).

  • Several reasons may make bronchoscopy necessary.

Most common indication is the suspicion of malignancy in any form of chest imaging.

Another common indication is sampling for microbiological examination, in order to diagnose a lung infection.

Smoking Cessation

  • Smoking is as much a physiological as physical addiction that is very difficult to stop without specialized medical treatment. Many smokers are unable to quit or even reduce smoking, whereas the recurrence rate among those who manage to quit is extremely high. Smoking cessation is a complete medical intervention, with psychological and pharmacological support, if needed.
